The circular foam discs slide on between plates to create a small gap just wide enough to easily remove the plates when you’re done with your workout, eliminating the need to try and pry the plates apart. They also reduce damage to the plates—especially metal ones that are prone to chipping due to blunt impact—by providing a cushioned barrier when you drop a new plate on. An added benefit is that sled spacers effectively reduce unwanted sound.
